From the Hills of Chakrata to the Top of the World: Uttarakhand’s Lucky Rawat Represents India on Historic North Pole Expedition

From the quiet hills of Chakrata to the frozen Arctic, Uttarakhand’s Class 10 student Lucky Rawat has scripted a remarkable chapter in India’s scientific journey after being selected as the country’s sole student representative for the prestigious ‘Icebreaker of Knowledge’ expedition to the Geographic North Pole.

Chosen through a highly competitive three-stage international selection process, Lucky emerged as the only participant from India among students representing 22 countries. The programme has brought together young minds aged 14 to 16 years from countries including India, Bangladesh, China and Russia, with one student selected from each participating nation.

The 10-day scientific and educational expedition commenced from the FSUE Atomflot base in Murmansk, Russia, aboard the legendary 50 Let Pobedy, one of the world’s most powerful nuclear-powered icebreakers. The vessel will navigate through the frozen Arctic Ocean to the Geographic North Pole (90° North latitude)—a destination that only a tiny fraction of the world’s population has ever reached.

Reaching the Geographic North Pole remains a rare privilege, with only a limited number of people worldwide ever setting foot at 90° North. For a school student from Uttarakhand, the opportunity marks an extraordinary milestone.

The Arctic is one of the world’s most important regions for climate research. Scientists study its rapidly changing environment to better understand global warming, melting sea ice, shifting ocean currents and their impact on weather systems across the planet. Through the expedition, participants gain first-hand exposure to one of Earth’s most critical natural laboratories.

More than an extraordinary voyage, the Icebreaker of Knowledge programme is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. During the expedition, participants will engage in scientific workshops, Arctic research, discussions on climate change, marine science, polar ecology, environmental conservation, cultural exchange and international collaboration while experiencing one of Earth’s most remote and fragile ecosystems.

Speaking from Murmansk before the expedition, Lucky expressed his pride at representing the country, saying he had come as India’s ambassador for the expedition. He noted that very few people ever get the opportunity to reach the North Pole and described the experience as a dream come true. He also revealed that participants had to clear a rigorous three-stage competition before one student from each country was selected.

Lucky’s father, Ram Singh, described the selection as one of the proudest moments for the family, saying his son had earned the opportunity purely on merit after successfully clearing the competitive selection process to represent India on the global stage.

Adding another dimension to his achievement, reports also note that Lucky is an accomplished judoka, reflecting the discipline and determination that have helped him reach this remarkable milestone.

For the young students of Uttarakhand, Lucky Rawat’s journey is a reminder that dreams born in the Himalayas can reach even the northernmost point on Earth.
